Why school districts use NEMT

Districts typically partner with NEMT providers because they offer:

  • Specialized vehicles (wheelchair, stretcher, ADA-compliant)

  • Trained staff (handling medical or behavioral needs)

  • Flexibility beyond traditional bus systems

  • Reliability for hard-to-serve populations

Care 2 Ride

    Core services NEMT can provide to schools

1. Transportation for students with special needs

​

  • Wheelchair-accessible vans (ramps/lifts)

  • Door-to-door or curb-to-curb assistance

  • Drivers trained in mobility assistance and safety
    ➡️ This is one of the most common uses, especially for students with IEPs or disabilities.

2. IEP-related transportation support

​

  • Transport to and from Individualized Education Program (IEP) services

  • Trips to:

    • Therapy (speech, occupational, physical)

    • Behavioral or developmental programs

  • Coordination with school schedules and care plans

        Note: When transportation is part of an IEP, the school district is typically responsible, and NEMT can                          act as a contractor to fulfill that need.

3. Medical-related school transportation

  • Trips between:

    • School ↔ medical appointments (during school day)

    • School ↔ hospitals, clinics, or therapy centers

  • Support for students with chronic conditions (dialysis, rehab, etc.)
        NEMT is specifically designed to ensure access to healthcare when regular transport isn’t sufficient.

4. Mobility assistance & supervision

​

  • Help from door-to-vehicle-to-destination

  • Assistance with:

    • Entering/exiting homes or buildings

    • Securing wheelchairs or equipment
          Higher-acuity services can include stretcher transport or protected transport when needed.

       Important distinction NEMT is not a replacement for school buses—it’s a             

       supplemental, specialized service used when:

 

  • Students require medical or mobility support

  • Routes are too complex or individualized

  • Standard transportation can’t meet compliance requirements
